Just in time for New Year, the Southern Food & Beverage Museum in New Orleans has published Red Beans and Rice-ly Yours: Recipes from New Orleans that Louis Armstrong Loved by Christopher Blake. Says Blake in his notes: “Had Louis Armstrong been destined for a cook, he would have created recipes and spread the fame of New Orleans in another manner…Many of these recipes were served the night Louis Armstrong played one of his final concerts.

“The great man of jazz regretted that his diet did not permit him to indulge, but the memory was there. To that memory, we have added even more recipes of the good New Orleans food Louis Armstrong loved best.”

Included in the booklet, among many wonderful dishes, are of course a classic Red Beans and Rice recipe, several ideas for Po Boys, Chicken Gumbo with Andouille Sausage and Oysters, Shrimp Remoulade, and Jamaican Rum Pie.

For your dining pleasure and to bring in 2009 by letting the good times roll, we’ll give you two recipes from “Red Beans” to try for yourselves.
