548noogA couple of weeks ago, I was cruising through Target looking for some leftover Halloween candy at 50 percent off, when I rounded the corner and right there, right where the orange-and-yellow candy aisles had been just days before, was a winter wonderland of holiday decorations that must have magically appeared overnight.

I checked my watch. November 8. I looked around at all the people sporting shorts and T-shirts on that unseasonably warm day. Then I scratched my head. Could it be Christmas already?

I should’ve known better. Eager retailers can’t seem to wait to wipe the shelves clean of hard candy and rubber masks in favor of the red n’ green things that make up the “most wonderful time of the year.” And each year the date to do so mysteriously moves up a day or two. But this was sort of ridiculous.
