The Athens City School System has been awarded a quarter-million dollar grant that will be used for technology. The system was one of eight applicants in Tennessee to receive the $250,000 Rural Technology Grant for New Technology Initiatives.
The grant will mean additional technology equipment for Athens classrooms, along with paying for a part-time technician for the program’s implementation.
In addition to the opportunities provided to the students, the grant also includes a training component for parents, he added.
Specifically, the equipment will include 300 “Netbooks” – described as small and light laptop computers – for the city’s schools, along with five interactive whiteboards.
Teacher training is part of it as well.
