EPB’s Offering Of “Adult Movies” Faces Scrutiny

    Written by Bill Wallace
    November 2, 2009 – 1:36 pm

Playboy_girlA former state senator is raising questions over the Electric Power Board’s expansion into the video business by offering  the Playboy Channel and access to adult movies as part of its premium pay-for-view service.

Critics object to a government-owned utility putting out what they say is pornography.

David Fowler, a former Republican state senator who now heads the Family Action Council of Tennessee, contends there is no excuse for a government-entity peddling porn.

Fowler says, “The government simply should not offer pornography stations on cable networks they own.”

But the E-P-B says it has a free speech mandate not to censor a diverse programming menu, and it has strict limits on underage people accessing adult movies.

Under those circumstances, courts have held that government identities CAN’T arbitrarily edit their entertainment offerings.

    1. dave says:

I’d much rather have my kids see fake boobs bouncing than Glenn Beck fear-mongering.

    2. Tomhyer says:

      Did you mean gov’t ‘entities’?

    3. Robert Cob says:

      They took my porn!

      Burk a durr!

    4. Tony H. says:

      They took your porn!

      Durka burr!

    5. Dan says:

Your editing needs help. “Government-owned identity” (I think you mean “entity”).

–”…mandate not to censure a diverse programming menue” (you mean “censor”).

What’s with the all caps “CAN’T.” Looks weird and unprofessional.

    6. Social comments and analytics for this post…

This post was mentioned on Digg by alanocu: What people do and watch in their own homes is their business. If this company wants to expand their video business, they have every right to do so without a senator or the government sticking their nose in …

    7. fapfap says:

      YaY porn!!!!!!1!

    8. Phil says:

      Government entity?

    9. Paul says:

Who cares? You don’t have to watch it.

    10. [...] Another Republican wants to stop you from being able to pay for porn. [...]

    11. coldwater71 says:

WHAT??? who pulled up an old news article from 1964?? Oh, wait… what you say? this is TODAY’s news??? are you kidding me??? Get a grip Fowler, on a remote, on your johnson, whatever… just keep it off the general public and their right to a choice.

    12. Gotta Be Kidding says:

Geez we went from not more than 200 years ago from living in single room log cabins/huts with 12 kids watching the parents have sex in the same room to no harm done. To this? Another Family value republican with who knows what hidden (for now) of his own crazy sex life-spouting off how sex is harmfull? Lets get a grip and stop all the horror movies from being shown.

    13. jebodiah says:

      Thayyy took our porn!!

      Blerk yer durr!!!

    14. Common Sense Please says:

To say the government is endorsing Porn because it’s helping to subsidize cable, is to say they are endorsing every single thing that is broadcast on all cable networks. Obviously, those of us who take a moment to think that through see that is not the case.

I do not believe the government is endorsing Project Runway, Army Wives, Fox News, or the cesspool of reality TV anymore than I believe they’re endorsing porn. What they ARE endorsing is CHOICE when it comes to cable which is a very welcome second option to free us from the evils of monopolistic Comcast.

      Get over yourself David Fowler!

    15. alex prescott says:

Why is it ok to show people killing each other with guns, but not ok to show a boob?

    16. JoeSixPackPlumber says:

      Dey tuk ur porn!

It amazes me that parents are fine with their kids witnessing decapitations on television, but heaven forbid they see a pair of nice jiggly tits or two people bumping uglies.

The whole “sex” is dirty thing is so 1800’s. Really.
      Grow the hell up.

Sex is fun. Sex is healthy. Fun, healthy people do it. Just like anything else, be careful how you go about it and who you do it with.

    17. Brian Q says:

Heh, next think you know they will try to preach abstinence-only, teach against evolution and … um.. whoops, they already are.. when is the world going back to flat and the dig up Gallieo and threaten herassy charges against him… again.

    18. tard-y says:

Enough with all the backword thinking.. dont like pr0n, dont turn on the pr0n. Heh, this electric-company is much cooler than the one we grew up with on TV.. Chet did have the porn-stash tho.. :)

    19. alex says:

republicans ruin all the fun, don’t they?

    20. Chris V says:

All of a sudden the Republicans are not in favor of the free market. They want centralized control by the government. The Republicans want to stifle freedom.

    21. deren says:

Republicans are such hypocrites. They are always the ones in public condeming stuff like this and then having sex with hookers in real life.

    22. GODZILLA says:

      THEY TOOK OUR POOHRN!

    23. Felicia says:

I don’t know why anyone would go to EPB anyway. Their prices are just as high as Comcast, and if you call Comcast and tell them you are going to EPB they will cut your bill in half to help you out. Haven’t had EPB offer me a deal to come to them. As far as they Playboy channel, perhaps a government entity shouldn’t be broadcasting porn, but it is a PAID service, not just a channel your kids can flip to. And besides, the stuff they play on Playboy TV is barely porn at all anyway.

    24. Grace says:

I’m a liberal democrat, and I think the government shouldn’t be in the pornography business. Lots and lots of feminists don’t support the expansion or endorsement of the porn industry, particularly those of us who used to WORK in the sex industry.

    25. Jeremy says:

Wait Wait, there miss liberal democrat,, the government shouldnt get in the way of a government owned business and tell them what they can and cannot sell to their customers. While I understand your statement, you are a little overly feminist on this. I mean, its not an endorsement, its an option to stay competitive in the industry. Lots of people like porn,, men and women. why do these people have to stop people from having the option to view porn just becuase you dont like it. I mean, why should everyone stop doing something just because you think its wrong. go back to 1812 and hide in a sack. And god, anyone that used to work in the sex industry should understand that porn is required in todays society. go hide under your rock.

    26. Joshua says:

      Pron is l33t. Go EPB!

    27. Paul5 says:

I think there are other things that the government should focus on, besides I don’t think many kids will have the money for the premium programming
