Budget Crisis May End Georgia Sales Tax Holiday

    Written by Gary Poole
    March 12, 2010 – 3:16 pm

As Georgia continues to face free-falling state revenues, one of the more popular programs may be forced to end.  Governor Sonny Perdue acknowledged that the annual sales tax holiday may have to go away.

Forced to deal with a $442-million drop in next year’s budget due to the loss of stimulus money, Perdue has also proposed additional 3 percent reductions to state agencies and a 10-and-a-quarter percent reduction in reimbursements to Medicaid providers.

He has long vowed that he will not resort to raising taxes, but instead will continue to cut programs … such as the sales tax holiday … until the state budget matches expected tax revenue.
