New Higher Speed Limit Urged For MLK Boulevard

    Written by Gary Poole
    November 4, 2009 – 4:25 pm

25mphA year after the Chattanooga City Council rejected a proposal to raise the 25 mile per hour speed limit on MLK Boulevard, city traffic engineer John Van Winkle wants the council to reconsider.

He is urging the council to raise the speed limit to 35 miles per hours for the section from Palmetto Street to Central Avenue.

Councilman Andrae McGary, whose district includes the road, countered with a suggestion that the entire road be an even 30 mile per hour.

Van Winkle based his recommendation after studies show that a vast majority of drivers on the road travel well in excess of the current speed limit.
