    Arrests Made In Playground Shootings

    Written by Gary Poole
    November 6, 2009 – 10:30 am

arrest1Thursday afternong just before 5:00 p.m., Chattanooga patrol officers responded to a shooting call at a playground on Queens Drive in East Chattanooga.  No victims were located at the playground, but officers did detain two witnesses.

A short time later, two shooting victims arrived at Erlanger by private vehicle.  One victim, 28-year-old Antonio Green, has a gunshot wound to the upper right chest and was unresponsive.  Emergency room personnel initiated life saving efforts but he  was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m.

The second victim, 29-year-old Artie Watson, had a gunshot wound to the lower leg and left hand and was treated for his injuries.

During the investigation that followed, it was found that 18-year-old Edward Jackson III and 22-year-old Darryl Williams, Jr., were at the playground for a drug transaction.  According to Williams, Green and Watson attempted to rob him and Jackson.  They began beating Jackson, trying to get him to give up his money when Jackson produced a .25 caliber semiautomatic handgun and started shooting Green and Watson.

While this was taking place, the witnesses who were playing basketball yelled to the children on the playground to go inside.  Watson was able to drive himself and Green to Erlanger.

Jackson fled the scene on foot to Delano Street and Williams left the scene in Jackson’s vehicle.

A few minutes later, officers responded to 2112 Delano Street on a party bleeding, possibly shot.  Upon arrival, they found Jackson, not shot but assaulted and bleeding from the head.  He was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Williams was taken into custody after a traffic stop in the area

Jackson was charged with Criminal Homicide.  Watson was charged with Attempted Aggravated Robbery after his release from Erlanger Friday morning.
