Here is one of the more interesting items set to be discussed at the September 2 meeting of the Chattanooga City Council. As always, the agenda may be amended to add or subtract items. The City Council meets each Tuesday at 6:00 pm in the City Council Building at 1000 Lindsay St.

    7. Resolutions
    b) A resolution authorizing the Department of Parks and Recreation to accept a Transportation Improvements Program Grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation for the planning, engineering, and construction of an ADA accessible pedestrian and bicycle passage across the C.B. Robinson Bridge in the amount of $140,000.00 and authorizing the required matching funds in connection with said Grant in the amount of $35,200.00.

What this means is that, if the resolution passes, local two-wheel enthusiasts can cross the Tennessee River without having to play the “Am I going to get smacked by a truck” lottery.

We do wonder, though, how adding a “pedestrian and bicycle passage” will affect the existing traffic lanes on the bridge. Will it make them narrower, and how will it make our two-wheel friends any safer?

But anything that encourages people to park their cars and get some exercise is good in our book.
