Fire At Historic St. Elmo Church Ruled Accidental
Written by Gary PooleAugust 28, 2009 – 4:09 pm
Leaders of a team of arson investigators said today the cause of the fire at the St. Elmo United Methodist Church was accidental and was not arson.
City arson investigator James Whitmire said the fire started in the attic due to problems with old knob and tube wiring.
He said the same problem caused a small fire back in January.
Darryl Hill of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said there had been some old graffiti on the church, leading some to speculate that it was a hate crime.
A team of over 70 agents and investogators had been combing through the church all week.
