VW Officials Deny Claims Made By AFL-CIO Official

    Written by Gary Poole
    July 31, 2009 – 3:06 pm

vw_logoAn official with the AFL-CIO is claiming that Volkswagen is not living up to their promise to hiring locally for the one billion dollar plant being constructed at Enterprise South.

Tom Owens, director of marketing and communications for the union’s Building and Construction Trades Department, claims that a number of contracts are going to out-of-state firms.

He further claims that VW is using “undocumented” workers at the construction site.

VW officials, however, counter that in the past year they have awarded nearly 436 million dollars worth of local contracts.

They further stated that not only is it federal law, but a requirement to do business with Volkswagen that all contractors and subcontractors must maintain legal documentation for all workers on their site

All of VW’s contractors and subcontractors have confirmed to them in writing that all of their workers are documented.
