    No New School Board Member
County commissioners, noting that there are only two school board meetings between now and the November elections, have decided to not appoint anyone to fill the school board seat held by the late Debra Matthews. Outgoing Chairman Bill Hullander said that the commission felt it was best to let the voters decided on who should represent them, pointing out that Commissioner Warren Mackey-who represents the same district-will be attending the meetings in a non-voting capacity in case something comes up directly affecting his district.

    But Some New County Leaders
Speaking of the county commission, the leadership positions for the body have changed as Jim Coppinger was unanimously elected as the new chairman, while Warren Mackey was elected vice chairman. There was a bit of dissension during the meeting last Thursday as Commissioner Greg Beck pointed out that no one from Districts 4, 5 or 6 have held a leadership position in the last 14 years. After calling the current open system “laughable” and “blatantly discriminatory”, he made a motion to rotate the positions. The idea was dropped when no one would second the motion.
