    Governor Zach Wamp?
Our intrepid U.S. congressman confirmed rumors that he is seriously considering throwing his name into what promises to be a very crowded ring for the race to replace departing Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen. In town for a variety of public appearances, Congressman Wamp told supporters that he plans to run for governor unless former U.S. Sen. Bill Frist wants the job. Not everyone is pleased with his decision, including one prominent local Republican who feels that Chattanooga would be much better served with Zach continuing to represent us in the House.

Hamilton County School Enrollment Is Up By A Whopping 29
Twenty-nine more students entered Hamilton County schools last week than did the year before, with the growth coming from elementary schools (up 227 students) at the expense of high and middle schools (down 198 students). While that is good news for the school system, we are still not sure why our children have to head back to school with a good month of summer still to go. We’ve yet to hear a compelling reason to start public schooling before Labor Day.

    Firefighters Feed The Hungry
Congratulations go out to our fine city firefighters, who helped collect more than 7,700 pounds of non-perishable food during their second annual food drive. That’s 200 pounds more than they collected the year before, with all of the donations going to support the Chattanooga Area Food Bank. However, there is still a need for more foodstuffs, especially dry beans, rice, oatmeal, cornmeal, flour and grits. As any good Southerner knows, life is a lot more tolerable if you can start the day with a nice big helping of grits.
