| One of the “ripple” effects of VW’s plans to build an assembly plant here has been that many other companies and manufacturers have taken a closer look at Southeastern Tennessee and are apparently seeing the same things that Volkswagen saw. The latest big economic news came yesterday when the Wacker Chemical Corporation announced that they plan to invest $1 billion (!!) in building a facility to manufacture of hyperpure polycrystalline silicon in Bradley County. For those of you without the benefit of a degree in chemistry, polycrystalline silicon is a primary component used in the manufacture of solar panels and semiconductors.
Not only is this a huge amount of money coming into the region, on top of all the other recent manufacturing news, but it also means that another 500 well-paying jobs will be created. Governor Bredesen was very pleased with Wacker’s decision. “This announcement further enhances Tennessee’s growing reputation as an innovation center in the development and manufacture of clean energy technologies,” he said at a press conference to announce the plans. However, before you rush out to apply for either a construction job or a plant position, executives with Wacker explained that there will be an extensive design period and work in process before construction would begin. They are going to locate the facility on a 550-acre greenfield site near the Hiwassee Industrial Park in the Charleston area of Bradley County. |
