Hey Tazz,

Sorry I am just now responding, I rarely read my own profile LOL I just noticed your post today.

You know I really just got lucky and made myself available to work at the drop of a hat. Whenever someone called in sick or wanted a day off I was there. My boss at Chattanooga State really appreciated that. Looking back I was really terrible so I feel sorry for those who listened but, I gained the self confidence to take a chance and send out resumes while I was still at WAWL. Taking the opportunity to get to know people who worked in the same field was also beneficial. At the time my boss at the WAWL was in constant contact with local radio stations and whenever they needed part-timers they would ask him about his volunteer employees/students..that helped me get into the door at WDOD when it was country and also at WDEF. My boss also worked at 92.3 and when they were looking for a part-timer he told them about my work ethic and they took a chance and hired me. I again, made myself available whenever they needed someone to fill-in. When they had a full-time opening at night they asked me if I was interested and the rest is history. So my advice is make yourself available. Start by volunteering it looks great on resumes and it also gives you the opportunity to learn the latest programming software.

I originally went to UTC in the late 80s and I found that their Communications dept leaned toward Marketing/Advertising. They did have a Journalism department but at that time (I can't speak to the program now)it centered around print journalism (newspaper, magazine). I was not interested. I am sorry that you had little success at Chattanooga State. I do believe though a college that is hands-on instead of focusing on "theory" is the most beneficial when striving toward a career in the field of broadcasting.

Thank you for taking the time to post. You can also email me anytime at denise@brewerradio.com.

Sincerely,

I too went to Chattanooga State's broadcasting route but with little success. I have over 12 years experience in the entertainment biz any suggestions for breaking into the Chattanooga market not that I live here coming from a pro like yourself? I had looked into UTC possible but would like to get hired by a local station. Nobody is hiring in this market.
Respectfully,
Tony "Tazz" Campbell
