  • City Owed Millions, Has Trouble Collecting Fines
  • A recent investigation into unpaid parking fines owed to the City of Chattanooga showed that the city is owed over $7 million.  However, factors such as the ten year statute of limitations and a reluctance on the part of the city to go after those who have less than $1,000 in unpaid fees could severely limit the amount of money that can be recovered.

Chattanooga’s Chief Financial Officer Daisy Madison said that due to court costs and legal fees, it is not financially feasible to target all but the top offenders.

The result is that only about $1.2 million will be able to be recovered.

Making matters worse is the fact that nearly one in four parking records have no name attached to them, due to both human and computer database errors.
