Chattanooga’s only German-American gastropub rests on Frazier Avenue atop the North Shore, overlooking Coolidge Park, the Tennessee River, and the Walnut Street Bridge. But what is a gastropub? Brewhaus defines it for us: an “environment with a strong emphasis on chef driven food, paired with good ale & wine, in a casual setting”. The inventive chefs at Brewhaus have developed a menu special to Chattanooga, heavily inspired by traditional, hale German foods and flavors, but with a southern-American twist in what turned out to be the perfect combination. Their creative menu has a healthy representation of German favorites, Southern classics, and the necessary sophisticated pub-grub for refined, yet relaxed, tastes.
If you’re not sure what to try first, the Brewhaus Sampler combines three of the most popular starters onto one delicious plate. It’s composed of one oversized German pretzel (soft, salted, fresh from the Bluff View Bakery, and served with their house-made cider mustard, horseradish mustard, and cherry ale mustard), three brat sliders (a lovely combination of the best of German and American favorites), and four signature kraut balls (bratwurst, cheese, and sauerkraut rolled in a house-seasoned flour, fried to perfection, and served with an ale mustard).
Those are just the starters. Don’t miss out on entrées like The Brewhaha, a grilled, beer-marinated brat and a smoked sausage atop a bed of kraut served with German potato salad, veggie medley, and ale mustard, or the vegetarian-friendly veggie spaetzle, German-style egg noodles tossed in a creamy mushroom pepper sauce with fresh steamed broccoli, carrots, and squash.
To go with you meal, try some fried apple pie for dessert, and any of their very large variety of both German and domestic beers. For beer connoisseurs, the O’Zapft Is! Bier Club is a great option, since members receive discounts and can vote for new beers on draught. Two new beers to try this winter season come straight from the Chattanooga Brewing Company: Winter Warmer and Black Lager.
Brewhaus is everyone’s pub, whether you’re wearing coming straight from work, working out, or hanging out with friends. Winter is coming quickly, so you’ll need a warm, welcoming gastropub with hearty food, robust beer, and good friends. Auf gute lage und froehliche naechte! (Here’s to a good round of beer and cheerful nights!)
